| biography:
| Writer, born in Naarden, W Netherlands. He combined his profession of general practitioner with a career in writing. Beginning in 1935 with Verhalen (Stories), he continued as a short-story writer in which day-to-day reality is blown to grotesque dimensions by means of exaggeration and escalation. Though often humorous, his later work is more philosophical in nature. The fantastic universe as described in his work did not receive any acclaim until the 1950s. |
