| biography:
| Sultan of the Ottoman empire. He succeeded his father (1389), and conquered Bulgaria, with parts of Serbia, Macedonia, and Thessaly, and most of Asia Minor. His rapid conquests earned him his nickname. For 10 years he blockaded Constantinople, defeating a large army of crusaders under Sigismund of Hungary (1396). He would have entirely destroyed the Greek empire if he had not been defeated by Timur near Ankara (1402). |
