| King of the Belgians (1951–93), born at Stuyvenberg Castle, near Brussels, the elder son of Leopold III and his first wife, Queen Astrid. He succeeded to the throne in July 1951 on the abdication of his father over the controversy of the latter's conduct during World War 2. In 1960 he married the Spanish Doña Fabiola de Mora y Aragón. A Roman Catholic, in 1990 he resigned his throne for a day to overcome a constitutional crisis caused by his refusal to sign a law legalizing abortion. |
