| Footballer, born in Santa Fe, Argentina. At age 17 he dropped basketball in favour of football, and two years later joined Argentinean club Newell's Old Boys, winning the South American club championship in his first season. In 1991 he won his first international cap and also joined Serie A side Fiorentina where, among his many achievements, he scored 27 goals in 13 games. He moved to AS Roma in May 2000 for £22 million, the second-largest transfer fee in football history at that time. He was a member of the Argentine squad in the 1994, 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cup Finals. |
