| biography:
| Theologian, preacher, and poet, born in Granada, S Spain. A nephew and disciple of Fray Luis de León, and possible writer of some of the poems attributed to Luis, he entered the Augustinian order in 1592. De agno typico (1604) is in part a defence of his uncle. His major work is the collection of Lenten sermons, Sermones de cuaresma (1605–10), which are written in excellent prose enlivened with colloquialisms. His ‘Apologia de las obras y doctrina de San Juan de la Cruz’ remains in manuscript in the National Library in Madrid. His theological treatises in Latin were well regarded during his lifetime, and on his death Francisco Montesdoca published Fama póstuma (1630) in which Fray Basilio was described as ‘príncipe de los ingenios y fénix de las ciencias’. |
