| Christian theologian, born in Caesarea, Asia Minor. He was consecrated Bishop of Nyssa in Cappadocia by his brother Basil the Great (c.371). Deposed in 376 by the Arian Emperor Valens, he regained office in 378 after Valens's death. An outstanding scholarly defender of orthodoxy, he wrote several theological works, sermons, and epistles. Feast day 9 March. |
