| biography:
| First Christian sovereign of Russia (980–1015), the son of Svyatoslav, Grand Prince of Kiev (d.972). He became Prince of Novgorod in 970, and in 980 seized Kiev from his brother after his father's death. He consolidated the Russian realm from the Baltic to the Ukraine, extending its dominions into Lithuania, Galicia, and Livonia, with Kiev as his capital. He made a pact with Byzantine Emperor Basil II (c.987), accepting Christianity and marrying the emperor's sister. He then ordered the conversion to Christianity of his subjects, punishing those who resisted. Feast day 27 September. |
