| Poet, born in Ueno (Iga), C Japan. He was raised in an atmosphere of poetry. Becoming master of the haiku, he started his own school, but later retired to a hermitage. Influenced by Zen Buddhism, he then journeyed extensively, and composed his celebrated book of travels The Narrow Road to the Deep North (1689) in a mixture of poetic prose and haiku. |
