| biography:
| Navigator and explorer, probably born in Portugal. In 1487 John II gave him two vessels to follow up the discoveries already made on the W coast of Africa. Driven by a violent storm, he sailed round the Cape of Good Hope, and discovered Algoa Bay. The discontent of his crew compelled him to return (1488). He also travelled with Vasco da Gama in 1497, and with Cabral in 1500, during whose expedition he was lost in a storm. |
