| Novelist and autobiographer, born in Sabadell, Catalunya, NE Spain. His restlessness brought him experiences of great value to his writing even if the absence of taste or a refined artistic instinct became more and more obvious with every succeeding book, though his beginnings had been brilliant. He earned a precarious living as an actor in Spain and Latin America, but won great success with his first novel Marcos Villarí (Barcelona, 1927), finally published after many rejections. This was followed by Germán Padilla (1927), Almas de cristal (1940), Pitusín (Barcelona, 1941), Karú-Kinká (Barcelona, 1946) set in Patagonia, Tamara (Barcelona, 1953), and Los muertos no se cuentan (Barcelona, 1961). He capitalized on his success in fiction by writing an autobiographical trilogy, of which the most interesting volume was the second: La cara y la cruz del camino (Barcelona, 1963); and he turned his dramatic skills to writing in Tres comedias (1951). |
