| biography:
| Cistercian monk and religious novelist, born in Aragón, EC Spain, the author of Primera parte de la Diana a lo divino (1581). Being at court in 1559, he explains in his prologue that he found everybody reading the Diana of Montemayor, ‘la en Romance aya visto’. He therefore conceived the idea of a religious adaptation of the work in prose, in achievement not altogether unworthy of its original. Diana here becomes the Blessed Virgin Mary and profane love is transmuted into divine. Ponce's projected sequel was never published, and may never have been written. |
