| Mathematician, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He studied at Amsterdam University, and became professor at Groningen (1928–31), Leipzig (1931–45), Johns Hopkins (1947–8), Amsterdam (1948–51), and Zürich (1951–62). He worked in algebra, algebraic geometry, and mathematical physics, and more recently had published books on the history of science and mathematics in the ancient world, such as Science Awakening (1954). His classic textbook, Modern Algebra, (1931) was influential in publicizing the new algebra developed by Hilbert, Artin, and others. |
