| biography:
| British statesman, born in Netherby, Cumbria, NW England, UK. He studied at Oxford, entered parliament as a Whig in 1826, became First Lord of the Admiralty (1830–4), reformed administration of the Navy, and helped draft the electoral reform bill (1832) under Earl Grey. He became home secretary under Peel in 1841, supported the Corn Law Repeal Bill, and resigned (1846) as soon as it was carried. On Peel's death in 1850 he became leader of the Peelites, and was First Lord of the Admiralty in the coalition ministry (1852–5). |
