| Conductor and instrumentalist, born in Melbourne, Victoria, NE Australia. He studied at the Conservatory of Music, Sydney, and played with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and the Hallé and other British orchestras. From 1955–68 he was principal horn with the London Symphony Orchestra, and featured as a soloist on most of the LSO's recordings in this period. He has conducted many international orchestras, and became conductor of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra in 1982. He was also professor of horn at the Royal Academy of Music in London (1963–74). He became a US citizen in 1996, and the same year announced his retirement from professional performance. |
