| Speedway rider, born in Christchurch, New Zealand. He appeared in a record 17 consecutive world championship finals (1954–70), and a record 18 all told, during which he scored a record 201 points and took part in 87 races, winning the title in 1957–8, 1964, and 1966. He won the British League Riders' championship six times in succession (1965–70). His career started with Wimbledon (1952), and he also rode for New Cross, Southampton, Swindon, and Hull. After retiring (1976), he ran a motorcycle business in Southampton, and was a co-promoter of the 1982 world championships in Los Angeles. |
