| biography:
| Geographer, geologist, and traveller, born in Karlsruhe, SW Germany. He studied at Wrocław, Poland (formerly Breslau, Prussia) and Berlin, in 1860 accompanied a Prussian expedition to E Asia, then travelled in Java, Siam, Burma, California (1863–8), China, and Japan (1868–72). After his return he became professor of geology at Bonn (1875), and of geography at Leipzig (1883) and at Berlin (1886), his research helping to develop the field of geomorphology. |
