| A member of an old Dutch family, born in Oldehove, Groningen, N Netherlands. A Catholic, he joined the Reformed Church in 1704 and went as ambassador of the States-General to Madrid in 1714–18, but was recalled as too pro-Spanish. He returned to Spain and became a Catholic again, serving the Spanish Crown. In Vienna, as a secret envoy of Spain he succeeded in bringing about a reconciliation between Philip V and Charles VI. He was prime minister of Spain in 1725–6. He fell out of favour and fled in turn to England (1728), Holland (1730), and Morocco (1731), where he turned Muslim and worked against Spain, before offending the Moroccans also. |
