| biography:
| Baron of Amsberg, Prince of The Netherlands, born in Dötzingen, near Hitzacker on the Elbe, NC Germany. He emigrated to Tanganyika in 1928, where his father, an ex-naval officer, became a planter. Educated in Germany, he was commissioned into a Panzer division in Italy (1944–5), then studied law and politics at Hamburg University (1948), and later entered German foreign service (1957). He married Beatrix, then Crown Princess of The Netherlands, in 1966, which caused considerable opposition in The Netherlands. His interests were particularly in the environment and in the Third World. He had been plagued by ill-health. |
