| biography:
| Doctor and politician, born in London, UK. She studied at King's College, London, and shared a practice with her husband in London. She worked with the Socialist Medical Association, and became a member of Middlesex County Council (1934). From 1938 to 1955 she was a Labour MP, continuing an unremitting fight for women's welfare on all issues, and often provoking great hostility. She became under-secretary to the ministry of food (1949), and chairman of the Labour Party (1954–5). She was created a life peeress in 1961. |
