| Philanthropist, born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. Educated at Benenden School in Kent, she nursed in occupied Europe in World War 2. As a result of her experiences there, she established the Sue Ryder Foundation, begun at Cavendish, Suffolk, in 1953, which now comprises 80 centres worldwide, offering residential care for the sick and disabled. In some countries projects function under the auspices of the Ryder–Cheshire Foundation, which linked her work with that of her husband, Leonard Cheshire. She was created a life peer in 1979. |
