| biography:
| British stateswoman, born in Lochgelly, Fife, E Scotland, UK. She studied at Edinburgh University and, as a Labour MP for North Lanark at the age of 24, became the youngest member of the House of Commons. A dedicated Socialist, she married Aneurin Bevan (1934). Appointed Britain's first arts minister in 1964, she doubled government funding for the arts, and was instrumental in setting up the Open University. In 1970 she retired from the House of Commons to be made a life peer. She published two autobiographies, Tomorrow Is a New Day (1939) and My Life with Nye (1980). |
