| British stateswoman, born in Burnley, Lancashire, NW England, UK. She studied at the London School of Economics, entered the House of Commons in 1959, and joined Harold Wilson's Labour government in 1964, reaching cabinet rank as paymaster-general in 1968. She then had three successful terms as minister of overseas development (1969–70, 1974–5, 1977–9). She was a popular and influential left-winger, with a strong concern for the needs of Third World countries. She was made a dame in 1979, and a life peer in 1988. |
