She studied at Queen Mary College, London, then worked at Labour Party headquarters before becoming private and political secretary to Prime Minister Harold Wilson (1956–73). Her background influence during the 1964–70 Labour government is chronicled in her book Inside No. 10 (1972). She was given a life peerage in 1974. |
