| Philanthropist, born in London, UK, the daughter of Sir Francis Burdett (1770–1844) and grand-daughter of Thomas Coutts. She inherited her grandfather's fortune in 1837, and used it to mitigate suffering. She established a shelter for fallen women, built model homes, and endowed churches and colonial bishoprics. In 1871 she received a peerage, and in 1872 she became the first woman to be given the freedom of the City of London. |
