| biography:
| French general and writer, born in Payerne, W Switzerland. He served as a volunteer in the French army (1798–1800), returned to civilian life, and wrote Treatise on Grand Military Operations (1804, trans title). Rejoining the army in 1804, he rose to become chief-of-staff to Marshal Ney (1813), but quit after unjust treatment by a senior officer and joined the Russian army as aide-de-camp to Alexander I (1813) and Nicholas I (1826). He wrote a great history of the wars of the Revolution (1806), a life of Napoleon (1827), and Summary of the Art of War (1838, trans title). |
