| biography:
| Zoologist, and political adviser, born in Cape Town, SW South Africa. He moved to Oxford in 1934, was a scientific adviser at Combined Operations HQ (1939–46), and became professor of anatomy at Birmingham (1946–68) and chief scientific adviser to the British government (1964–71). He carried out extensive research into primates, publishing such classic works as The Social Life of Monkeys and Apes (1932). He was knighted in 1956, and made a life peer in 1971. He published two volumes of autobiography, From Apes to Warlords (1978) and Monkeys, Men and Missiles (1988). |
