| biography:
| British statesman and businessman. He studied at University College London, and became an executive with the large clothing and household goods company, Great Universal Stores (1956–61). He was appointed director of the Centre for Policy Studies, a right-wing ‘think tank’ (1979–82), under Margaret Thatcher, and was chairman of the Manpower Services Commission (1981–4). Created a life peer (1984), he was brought into the Thatcher Cabinet, becoming secretary of state for employment (1985–7), and secretary of state for trade and industry (1987–9), returning to commerce to chair Cable and Wireless (1990–5) and then to establish his own private equity firm. |
