| biography:
| British educationist. He studied at London University, then trained as a barrister at Gray's Inn. He became director of the Institute of Community Studies in 1953, and chairman and later president of the Consumers Association in 1965. He also played a leading role in the development of ‘distance learning’ in the Third World and, via the National Extension College, within Britain. His publications include The Rise of the Meritocracy (1958), Distance Teaching for the Third World (1980), The Metronomic Society (1988), and Life After Work - the Arrival of the Ageless Society (1991). He was created a life peer in 1978. |
