| Educationist, born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at Oxford, where he taught philosophy (1929–34), and was then headmaster at Uppingham (1934) and Shrewsbury (1944), and Vice-Chancellor of Reading University (1950). He was best known for his government investigation of homosexuality and prostitution (the Wolfenden Report, 1957). Knighted in 1956, he became a life peer in 1974. |
