| biography:
| Obstetrician, gynaecologist, and broadcaster, born in London, UK. He studied at London University's Medical College (1964) and went on to become a leading authority on reproductive medicine. His posts include head of the Department of Reproductive Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital (1978– ) and professor of fertility studies at the Imperial College School of Medicine (1987– ). In the 1970s he developed gynaecological microsurgery and undertook the first human tubal transplant, and in 1981 founded the National Health Service's in vitro fertilization (IVF) programme. He is well known as a television presenter of series such as Your Life in Their Hands (BBC, 1979–87), Child of Our Time (BBC, 2001, 2002), and Walking With Cavemen (2003). He was created a life peer in 1995. |
