| Judge, born in South Molton, Devon, SW England, UK. He studied at Queen's College, Taunton, qualified as a solicitor, and was called to the bar in 1947. He became a judge (1961), a Lord Justice of Appeal (1968), and Lord Chief Justice of England (1971–80), and a life peer in 1971. He was responsible for overseeing a restructuring of the English courts recommended by a royal commission. He was also chairman of an enquiry into a clash between the army and demonstrators in Londonderry in 1972. |
