| biography:
| Industrial executive, born in London, UK. He studied at London University, worked at the Admiralty (1939–45), was engaged in finance and property development (1947–54), then entered the radio and allied industries. He joined the General Electric Company in 1961, becoming managing director (1963–96), during which time he developed greatly the power and influence of the company through a series of take-overs. He was knighted in 1970 and created a life peer in 1980. |
