| British naval commander. He distinguished himself as a destroyer captain in World War 1, notably at the Battle of Jutland (1916). As commander-in-chief of the Home Fleet (1941–3), he was responsible for the operations leading to the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck. He became Admiral of the Fleet in 1943. |
