| British marshal of the Royal Air Force, born in Glenguin, Scotland, UK. During World War 2 he directed research and development at the Air Ministry, served as commander-in-chief (RAF) in the Middle East Air Force, moved on to the Mediterranean theatre (1943), and became deputy supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force under Eisenhower (1943–5). He was appointed air marshal in 1945, and created a baron in 1946. |
