| biography:
| Judge, born in Stellenbosch, SW South Africa. He studied at the University of Stellenbosch, and was called to the bar in 1958. He settled in Britain in 1973, and became a QC in 1979. He was appointed a judge of the High Court (1985), a presiding judge, Northern Circuit (1989), a Lord Justice of Appeal (1992), and a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary (1995). He served as chairman of the Departmental Advisory Committee on Arbitration Law (1990–4) and chairman of the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Legal Education and Conduct (1993–6). Knighted in 1985, he was created a life peer in 1995. |
