| biography:
| Politician, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, entered teaching, and twice stood for Parliament as a Labour candidate before winning a London seat in 1945. He entered the Cabinet in 1947, and held senior offices in every subsequent Labour administration. He became foreign secretary in 1968 on the resignation of George-Brown, and in 1975 started a two-year term as head of the British delegation to the European Parliament. He received a peerage in 1979. |
