| Commercial executive, born in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He was a schoolfellow of Simon Marks, and each married the other's sister. Together they developed Marks and Spencer. He was joint managing director of the company (1926–67) and succeeded Lord Marks as chairman (1964–7). His younger son, Marcus Joseph (1913–2001), who took a life peerage in 1980 as Lord Sieff of Brimpton, was chairman of Marks and Spencer from 1972 to 1984, when he became president of the company. |
