| biography:
| Roman Catholic clergyman. He studied at St Edmund's College, Hertfordshire, was ordained in 1944, and became secretary to the Archbishop of Westminster (1945–64), and Bishop of Portsmouth (1965–76). Appointed Archbishop of Liverpool in 1976, he developed a close working relationship with the Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, speaking out with him on matters of social concern. He was made a Companion of Honour in 1996. |
