| biography:
| Anglican clergyman, and former cricketer, born in Reigate, Surrey, SE England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and worked in London's East End as warden of the Mayflower Family Centre, Canning Town (1957–69). He was Bishop of Woolwich before becoming Bishop of Liverpool in 1975. There his profound social concern, the remarkable rapport in which he and his Roman Catholic counterpart worked together, and perhaps also his past record as a former Sussex (1953) and England (1954) cricket captain, made a lasting impact on the city. His books include Parson's Pitch (1964), Built as a City (1974), and Bias to the Poor (1983). He became a life peer in 1998. |
