| biography:
| English soldier and statesman, the brother-in-law of Henry VIII through marriage to Jane Seymour. He became high admiral of England in 1547, and in the same year married the dowager queen Catherine Parr, widow of Henry VIII. He sought by intrigue to obtain power, and after his wife's death in 1548 he tried to marry Princess Elizabeth. He was executed for treason by his brother (the Lord Protector for Edward VI). |
