| British statesman, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, became a barrister, and practised in Liverpool. He entered local government, served in World War 2, and became a Conservative MP in 1945. He was appointed minister of state (1951), supply (1954–5), and defence (1955), and as foreign secretary (1955–60) he defended Eden's policy on Suez. He later became Chancellor of the Exchequer, introducing the ‘pay pause’ (1960–2), Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House (1963–4), and Speaker of the House of Commons (1971–6). He was created a life peer in 1976. |
