| biography:
| Archbishop of Canterbury (1980–91), born in Crosby, Lancashire, NW England, UK. He studied at Oxford and Cambridge, served in the Scots Guards during World War 2, and was ordained in 1951. He was Bishop of St Albans for 10 years before becoming Archbishop of Canterbury. His period as archbishop was marked by a papal visit to Canterbury, the war with Argentina, ongoing controversies over homosexuality and women in the Church, and his highly acclaimed chairmanship of the Lambeth Conference in 1987. His books include Windows onto God (1983) and The Unity we Seek (1989). He was created a life peer in 1991. |
