| biography:
| Dutch politician, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He was Pensionary of Amsterdam in 1794, but was dismissed in 1795. In 1802 he became a member of the Provincial Administration of Holland and in 1805 Secretary of Holland. As minister of internal affairs (1808–10) he refused to sign the partition of Zeeland and Brabant in the Treaty of Paris. He was again minister of internal affairs (1815) and chairman of the Upper House (1818–35). |
