| biography:
| British naval commander, born in London, UK. He entered the navy in 1732, had a brilliant share in Hawke's victory against the French off Cape Finisterre (1747), and was appointed Governor of Newfoundland in 1749. In 1759 he destroyed the French flotilla gathering for the invasion of England. He was appointed commander-in-chief on the Leeward Is station (1761), where he captured Martinique, St Lucia, and Grenada (1762). He captured a Spanish convoy off Cape Finisterre, and a few days later defeated another squadron off Cape St Vincent (1780). Dutch islands in the West Indies, used as a base for American contraband trade, fell to him in 1781, and in 1782 he was victorious over the French off Dominica. He was created baron on his return to England. |
