| British admiral, born in London, UK. As a young commander, he fought against the French and Spanish, for which he was knighted (1747). His major victory was against the French at Quiberon Bay (1759), which caused the collapse of their invasion plans. He also became an MP (1747) and First Lord of the Admiralty (1766–71), and was created a baron in 1776. |
