| biography:
| Trade unionist and industrialist, born in Manchester, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. He became a trade union officer of the Union of Distributive and Allied Workers (1935–45). He became a Labour MP (1945–60), and for six months in 1951 was a member of the Cabinet as minister of labour and national service. Created a life peer in 1961, he will be particularly remembered as chairman of the National Coal Board (1961–71). |
