| Economist and educationist, born in Sipson, S Greater London, UK. Professor at the London School of Economics (1929–61), he directed the economic section of the war cabinet, then became chairman of the Financial Times (until 1970). He also chaired the Robbins Committee, which led to the major expansion of higher education in the UK (1961–4). His best-known work is An Essay on the Nature and Significance of Economic Science (1932), which has become a classic of methodology. He became a life peer in 1959, and a Companion of Honour in 1968. |
