| biography:
| British statesman. He studied at Oxford, qualified as a barrister, became a Conservative MP in 1955, and served in the governments of Harold Macmillan, Alec Douglas-Home, and Edward Heath. A committed European, he led the UK delegation to the Council of Europe and the Western European Union (1967–70). He left the House of Commons in 1987 to concentrate on business interests, and was made a life peer. |
