| Italian politician and prime minister (1861–2, 1866–7), born in Florence, Tuscany, NC Italy. An enlightened land-owner, in 1847 he helped publish the daily Patria. He was Tuscany's interior minister (1859) and organized the plebiscite for annexation to Piedmont (1860). He was a deputy in the new Italian parliament (1861), and as prime minister (1861–2) gave the state a strictly centralized structure. Elected prime minister again in 1866, he was defeated the following year after Italy's lacklustre performance in the 3rd Independence War, and resigned. |
