| Archaeologist, born in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, NE England, UK. He studied at Cambridge. His work has ranged widely, but exhibits a central preoccupation with the nature of cultural change in prehistory. He has excavated in Greece (1964–76) and Orkney (1972–4), notably at the chambered tomb of Quanterness. He became professor of archaeology at Cambridge in 1981, and Master of Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1986. His books include The Emergence of Civilization (1972), The Archaeology of Cult (1985), and The Cycladic Spirit (1991). He has also contributed to several pioneering archaeological programmes on BBC television, notably in the Chronicle series. He was made a life peer in 1991. |
